A RECORD

RAILWAY REVENUE WAIROA-NAPIER LINE XMAS TRAFFIC EXCEEDED (Special io tlic Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Tiie business handled on the Wairoa- Napier section of the East Coast railway tor the four-weekly period ended February 1! was greater .than that handled during any similar period since the line had been in operation. The total revenue of £OB4B was over £2OOO greater than the pro eeding Hour-weekly .period. The following are the particulars of railway traffic handled at the Wairoa station for the four-weekly period ended February 3, 1940: Outwards.—Passengers, 2650; cattle, four: sheep, 13,497; limber. 35 tons; other goods, 1750 tons. Revenue: Passengers, £1450; other goods, £1987; parcels, £4l; miscellaneous, £l7; total £3495. Inwards. —Cattle, 41; sheep, 13,948; timber, 18 tons; other goods, 1427 tons. Revenue: Parcels, £88; other goods, £3265: total, £3853. There has been a general all-round increase in all classes, and is further evidence of the value of the line to the district. The facilities provided for the carrying out of the work at the station were very satisfactory and no difficulty was experienced in meeting the demands of the department's clients. The passenger side of the station has been extremely busy and the figures for the Christmas and New Year period, which had been a record until then, were beaten. Carnival week, which fell during the period under review, saw eclipsed the bustle of passenger activities of the holiday season. Special railcar and steam passenger trains were put on to cope with tlie large influx of visitors to the carnival.. Nevertheless, the revenue collected from travellers on the extra services was no! included in the returns given above, due to the fact that the money was not handled ai Wairoa.

It was. staled the stqtionrnaster, pleasing to have learnt that many expressions oi appreciation were made oi' the good service provided to travellers and clients of the department.
