MAORI WOMAN FINED
TROUBLE IN NORTH CLYDE INDECENT LANGUAGE (Special tn the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Charged with using indecent language in Carroll street and also with drunkenness, Agnes Edwards, aged 34, a Maori, appeared before Messrs. V. E. Winter, and J. Corkill. J.P.’s, in the Wairoa Police Court yesterday. The defendant, who pleaded guilty to both counts, was represented by Mr. G. deV. Robinson. On the charge of using indecent language, she was convicted and fined £l. while on the drunkenness charge she was convicted and discharged. Sergeant L. T. Moore stated that at 9.45 p.m. on Saturday Constables A. McDellan and' S. Tucker wer,c in North Clyde when they heard a woman singing out in a loud voice. She was discovered to be under the influence of liquor, and. added the sergeant, there was no doubt that ‘he language she used was due to the liquor she had taken. The sergeant told the court that apparently the defendant sometimes took liquor and caused trouble among the Maoris in North Clyde Mr. Robinson stated that the defendant had had a very trying day. There had been a good deal of drinking by the Maoris and she had had much difficulty with them. She had been drinking with her husband.
