COALITION AIM
CANBERRA CABINET TALK WITH MR. MENZIES COUNTRY PARTY CHIEF CO-OPERATION IN WAR (Reed. Jan. 11, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 11. Discussions which may lead to the formation of a composite Federal Ministry took place between the Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies and Mr. A. Cameron, the leader of the Country Party yesterday. No decisions were announced im. mediately, but it is believed that a coalition may be effected soon. It is understood that the main stumbling block was the number of seats in the Cabinet to be granted to the Country Party. It is stated that Mr. Cameron’s demand for five seats was resisted by Mr. Menzies, who may be willing to grant four.
Mr. Menzies, while unwilling to sacrifice present members of the Cabinet, may be prepared to do so if assured of harmony and the co-opera-tion of the Country Party in the conduct of the war. Another difficulty confronting Mr. Menzies is that the influence of the former Country Party leader, Sir Earle Page, may be felt if any of his supporters were included in the Cabinet.
