WAIROA GUIDE CAMP

PICTURESQUE SETTING PROFITABLE TIME SPENT (Special to tlie Herald.) WAIROA. this clay. Situated on a splended site on the property of Springhill station, Frasertown adjacent to the home of the Wairoa District Commissioner, Miss M. Mcßae, Wairoa's first Girl Guide camp, which has just broken up, was an outstanding success, and those who attended spent a profitable and interesting time. The camp was erected in 'a delightful setting and was provided with an abundance of shady trees. A picturesque bathing pool was surrounded by drooping ferns and fed by a small waterfall. Several companies, including Bartletts, Frascrtown, Ist Gisborne, Mangapapa. Manutuke, Te Hapara, Wairoa and Lone Guides, were represented, the camp commencing on December 28 and breaking up last Friday. The officials responsible were:—Miss W. F. Lysnar, camp adviser. Gisborne assisted by Miss Joyce Unwin, Wairoa Guide Company, Miss Irma Busckc, Manutuke Brownie Pack, Miss Grace Alexander, Wairoa Guide Company, and Miss' Kathleen Henderson, Ist Gisborne Guide Company, holder of the Royal Life-Saving Society’s bronze medallion, was camp life saver. Mrs. Wilson, Frascrtown Guide Company, was present part of the time. Visit to Waikarcmoana The weather was fine most of the time and from every point of view the camp was a complete success. As well as the usual camp routine, the Guides journeyed to Waikarcmoana and visited the Aniwaniwa Falks, also gaining a beautiful panoramic view of the lake from the large plate-glass windows of the Waikarcmoana Hostel. On their return they called at Tuai and saw the hydro-electric development scheme, the outing being thoroughly enjoyed. The Guides also tramped to the Maru Maru caves and, armed with torches, saw the wonderful picture presented by the glow worms, stalactites and stalagmites. Several members of the camp also took the opportunity of attending the Frascrtown sports. A number of interested visitors from Wairoa, Frascrtown and Gisborne attended the camp on visitors’ day. Visits were paid to the camp by Dr. Hallwrigbl, lion, camp doctor, accompanied by Mrs. Hallwright, Sister Sumner, district nurse, and Mr. R. W. Pomare, Wairoa health inspector, all expressing pleasure with the arrangements and health of the campers.

The Guides and camp officials expressed their gratitude to Miss McRae ior giving permission for the camp to be held on her property and for taking such a personal and helpful interest in their activities.
