U-BOAT FOUGHT
BRITISH LINER FOUR-INCH GUN USED RAIDER DRIVEN OFF TWO-HOUR SEA BATTLE FAILURE OF TORPEDOES (Elec. Tel, Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Jan. 9, 11.45 p.m. RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 8. Passengers in the British liner Highland Patriot, of 14,130 tons, told of a two-hour battle with a German submarine when a few hours out from the Canary Islands, in the course of which the U-boat fired two torpedoes perilously close to the bow of the liner. The steamer retaliated with her 4in. gun mounted aft, whereupon the U-boat submerged and fled. The passengers were panicstricken and milled about, one being injured in the crush. Official British sources, however, denied a passenger’s story that one passenger died from injuries resulting from the panic.
