ALASKAN DEFENCE
AMERICAN CONCERN MENACE FROM EAST FORTIFICATION PLANS BIG VOTES REQUESTED (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Jan. 8, 2.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 7. The Washington correspondent of the United Press of America states that the army and navy are speeding up the fortification of Alaska. The army is asking Congressional authority to build an air base at Anchorage. The navy is pushing on the work on air bases at Kodiak and Sitka, costing respectively £2,000,000 and £725,000.
An Alaskan delegate to Congress, Mr. Anthony J. Dirnond, is asking for the appropriation of £100,000,000 for an air and naval base at Dutch Harbour, Alaska. A £3,000,000 estimate for the Anchorage base is included in the executive budget. It would supplement the bases at Hawaii and San Diego, completing the northern apex defence triangle intended to guarantee the Pacific frontier from a flank attack. United States opinion considers Alaska a weak spot in the western defences and probably a major point of attack if an Asiatic power attempted an invasion.
