REFEREE'S ERROR

MISTAKE IN GOLF FINAL An unusual position arose in the final of the Queensland professional golf championship recently between M, Smith and C. Conners, won by the former by 5 and 4. At the first hole in the afternoon round both opening drives went wide of the first green. Smith, on the right, close to the base of a small tree, and . Conners, to the left, in thick scrub. Both balls were lying badly. Smith then appealed to the referee to be allowed to lift and drop his ball under a local rule which rcr - ' - : —"A ball lying within a club’s length of a planted tree less than one club’s length in height must be lifted without i penally, and dropped away from, but ; within two clubs' lengths, of the . tree.” Smith's appeal was granted. MeanI while. Conners emerged from the ■ scrub and protested that the tree . was more than a club’s length in height and, after measurement was ’ made with a driver, he was found to be correct in his assumption. The ieferee was in an awkward position, ! and decided to act within his rights ■ and adhere to his decision. Smith won the hole by one stroke.
