COAST RAINFALL

IN MATAKAOA / FIGURES FOR YEAR Although more than 72in. of rain fell at Matarau station, near Hicks Bay, in 1939, the year was remarkable in that there were no floods of sufficient magnitude to cause damage to roads- „„ The total fall for the year was <2.80 in., compared with 125.30 in. in 1938. During the past month the rain totalled 7.91 in. on 18 days, the maximum fall being 3.64 in. on December 10. Moist and humid conditions were experienced for the greater part of the month. At Rukuhanga station, Cape Runaway, the year’s rain totalled 40.92 in., only a little more than half of the 1938 total of 75.93 in. Last month 4.44 in. of rain fell on nine days, the maximum fall being 2.13 in. on December 10, this being the heaviest for any 24 hours since August 28, 1938. A sharp fall of hail on December 2/ was not heavy enough to do any damage.
