FIRE IN SCRUB

PLANTATIONS MENACED An extensive fire which swept over five miles of country near Rainbow Mountain on the Taupo road was fought by gangs of men from the State Forest Service. Only the fact that the fire was burning against the wind most of the time prevented it being a serious danger to the pine plantations. A gang of workers lit the scrub near the Waiotapu Hotel in an effort to burn back to the fire. Although the fire did not cross the road at any point, but burnt towards the hills on the west of the road, it was a menace to the plantations.
