CHALLENGE FAILS
BID FOR HAWKE CUP POVERTY BAY BEATEN INNINGS AND 133 RUNS (Special to the Herald.) HAMILTON, this day. Poverty Bay’s bid for the Hawke Cup was unsuccessful, Waikato, the holders, having a convincing victory by an innings and 133 runs. The match, which was played at Seddon Park, Hamilton, was completed yesterday, a day earlier than expected. While Waikato were compiling their total of 391 in the first innings, nine Gisborne bowlers were used in the attack at various stages. G. H. Stewart took three wickets for 38 runs, D. Cederwall two for 57, and P. H. Dow two for 76. At the end of the Poverty Bay team’s first innings 170 runs were on the board, D. A. Wells, 32, D. Cederwall, 26, and P. H. Dow, 23, being the most successful batsmen. Bowling for Waikato, E. Everest took three wickets for 33 runs, M. Lyon two for 33. and A. Lissette two for 48.
The Bay were put in again and dismissed for the small total of 88 runs. Dow carried his bat for 28 runs, C. Fraser made 19, and R. Thomson 16. Everest was the best of the bowlers, with four wickets for 26 runs, and then followed J. Bright and T. Lyon, both three for 16.
