ANOTHER RESCUE

BOY AT SPONGE BAY CAUGHT IN UNDERTOW SWIMMERS’ DIFFICULTY A further instance of a rescue from drowning occurred at Sponge Bay on New Year’s Day, when a young boy, Owen Mogford, was recovered from deep water by two telegraph messengers, Messrs. Fred Pudney and Fred Rock. The boy was playing in the shallow surf on the beach near the Otipi homestead, when he ventured out too far and became involved in a strong undertow. Losing his footing, he was quickly swept out of his depth, in circumstances which would have given him no chance of survival but for the prompt action of Messrs. Rock and Pudney.

They noted the mishap to the lad, and went to his assistance at once, bringing him ashore after a difficult struggle against the undertow. The beach at the point where the accident occurred shelves sharply, and was the scene of a similar mishap some years ago, when a father and two sons were drawn out to sea, and escaped with the utmost difficulty only after a display of exceptional endurance. •Master Mogford is a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Mogford, Matthew road, Kaiti, and was spending the day at the beach with his parents.
