LOADING OF SHIP

APPEAL BY MINISTER WATERSIDERS CARRY ON An appeal made in person by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, on Saturday morning, was given a sympathetic hearing by the men working on an overseas vessel in the roadstead at Napier. On behalf of the Government, Mr. Nash requested that loading should be completed that day even though it meant working until midnight. After listening to him and the M.P. for Napier, the Hon. W. -E. Barnard, who accompanied him aboard, the men decided almost unanimously to carry on and leave to the visitors the question of determining the rate of pay.

Accompanied by Mr. Barnard and Messrs. N. Talbot and P. Mooney, president and secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr. Nash later met officials of the shipping company, and as a result of a generous offer by the shipping interests,* the matter was satisfactorily adjusted.
