ARCHBISHOP OF YORK CONDEMNS USE OF THE ATOMIC BOMB"
LONDON, December 28 (Rec. 10.25 a.m.).—The Archbishop of York, Dr Cyril Garbett, today condemned any suggestion for the use of the atomic bomb to achieve victory in Korea. In a pastoral letter he wrote: “Its use would never be forgotten or forgiven and would result in an irreparable breach between the East and West. Use of the atomic bomb could only be justified as a final attempt to save Western civilisation from catastrophic ruin by unprovoked aggression.” Declaring that it was urgent to secure a good understanding with China, Dr Garbett wrote: “The very thought of the possibility of war with its patient long-suffering people is hateful. Use of the atomic bomb against their cities or armies would outrage the conscience of our nation.”
’ The Archbishop called for another attempt “at the earliest possible moment and at the highest, level” to reach an agreement with Russia—without which there could be no peace in the world. Britons had no enmity against the Russians, most of whom were kindly, hard-working peasants, he added.
