Strike May Affect Beer Supplies
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (P.A.). —The Christchurch rail strike committee has decided that no beer will be taken by road to hotels in country towns which normally receive their supplies by rail. Several towns are likely to be affected by this decision, including Lyttelton, which receives a large quantity of its beer by rail. The strike committee is investigating how beer supplies are usually sent to various places and is checking on a brewery lorry which left Christchurch for Kaikoura. The Drivers’ Union will be asked to refuse to carry beer to those places which are not, normally served by road. This decision will mean that many country hotels and those in distant areas where brewery wagons did not call are likely to experience a beer shortage very soon.
