CYCLONE LASHES WANGANUI AREA: SLIGHT DAMAGE

WANGANUI, This Day (P.A.).— The tail-end of a tropical cyclone, accompanied by a sharp fall in the barometer to 28, lashed the Wanganui and Rangitikei districts yesterday afternoon and last evening. Falling trees and branches dislocated power and telephone services over a wide area. It is hoped that augmented repair gangs will have repairs made by the week-end. Miniature whirlwinds occurred in parts of Wanganui city, though the damage was slight. Roofs were blown off two woolsheds' at Maxwell and there was other damage to farm property. Nine tents at a cub camp were blown into the river when a particularly fierce gust swept down the Waitotara valley at midday yesterday. At the Ohakea weather station,-a gust of 66 miles per hour was recorded late yesterday afternoon.
