Long Cattle Trek In Australia

SYDNEY, .This Day (Rec. 12.30 p.m.).—A mob of 1200 three-* year-old steers has reached Trangie, in Western New South Wales, after being driven more than 3600 miles from Burnett Downs station in the Northern Territory. The cattle travelled an average speed of nine miles daily and the total journey took over a year.

The drive is regarded as an epic because floods doubled the length of the route by turning thousands of square miles of Australia’s inland into a vast lake. Swarms of mosquitoes and flies plagued the areas through which the cattle and their four drovers passed. Thousands of sheep died but the hardier cattle survived and even throve, putting on 1001 b each on the journey. Only one beast was lost.
