CYCLING Good Field For Road Race Yesterday
Despite showery weather conditions, a large field of riders took part in a six-mile road race from Karoro yesterday morning conducted by the Greymouth Cycling Club. J. Cooper, of Camerons, and D, Clarke, of Stillwater, two of the club’s veteran riders, showed good form to gain first and second placings respectively and also fastest time honours from the 15 second mark. • P. Egan, off 45 seconds, turned on a good sprint over the last few hundred yards to take third placing from a bunch of six riders. Cooper’s time for the six-mile course was 18 minutes.
A three mile race from Karoro for novices resulted as follows: A. Messenger (off 2j minutes), 1; G. Wotton (off 20 seconds), 2; H. Mason (off 2j minutes), 3. G. Wotton gained the fastest time, 10 min. 40sec. The club’s track meeting, which was to have been held at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon, was abandoned owing to the adverse weather conditions. The programme, which included a sprint match race between G. Armstrong and K. Morgan, will now be held on Wednesday evening.
