MEMORIAL TO MR WEBB UNVEILED BY MR SEMPLE
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (P.A.) —lt was fitting that the men for whom Mr Webb had done so much should erect a memorial to him, said the former Minister of Works in the Labour Government (Mr R. Semple), speaking at Bromley Cemetery on Saturday morning, when he unveiled a memorial to Mr T. C. Webb erected by the United Mine Workers of New Zealand.
Although other organisations had offered to contribute, the miners considered that the memorial should be subscribed by themselves alone said the national secretary of the union (Mr F. Crook). Union members had responded immediately, every miner contributed to the memorial. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), the secretary of the Canterbury Trades Council (Mr R. MacDonald, the secretary of the Canterbury Trade Union Congress (Mr A. B. Grant) and the president of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee (Mr T. Martin) also spoke.
