N.Z. RIFLEMEN SHOOTING WELL IN AUSTRALIA

SYDNEY, October 2.—The Metropolitan rifle meeting was fired today over ranges of 300, 600, 700, and 900 yards, with 10 counting shots at each distance. All members of the New Zealand team competed in this oneday meeting and acquitted themselves well. Steady rain fell throughout the day. The championship was won by. A. Ray, of Concord Club, Sydney, with a score of 194.

F. J. Soler, of New Zealand, won the first match at 300 yards with a brilliant 13-shot possible, and filled fifth place in the aggregate. Other New Zealand scores were: F. Jeune 187, J. W. Johnson 185, H. Donald 184, A. F. Paynter 177, J. Keoghan 177, L. Hutchison 175. Of the Upper Hutt members, J. N. Gregory was outstanding with a 49 at 700 yards. H. Russell, of Opaki, also shot a 49 at this range. The eight-man service team for the Gordon Highlander match against the Australian States has been selected as follows: J. W. Johnson, R. N. McVicar, H. King, F. Jeune, A. W. Paynter, R. Tantrum, L. Hutchison, C. Prichard. Leading scores in a trial for the Commonwealth teams’ shoot w ere: —j. Keoghan 135, R. N. McVicar 135, F. J. Soler 133, L. Hutchison 132, C. Prichard 131, J. Johnson 131. 2
