SPORTING JOHNNY GLOBE APPEALS AS DEBBY PROSPECT

The three-year-old Johnny Globe name into discussions for the New Zealand Derby Slakes at Addington next month when he beat a useful field of pacers over a mile and a half at New Brighton last month.

Trained at West Melton by his owner, the former Hutt Park and Ashhurst trainer D. G. Nyhan, Johnny Globe gave 12 yards start to the older minor-dividend payers Diligent and Loylan. both winners last season, and won decisively.

The Logan Derby colt was a consistent performer as a juvenile, when he raced six times for a win, two seconds, two fourths and an unplaced effort in the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton. Winning Sequence At his first start Johnny Globe defeated Vivanti in the Nursery Stakes at Timaru. He was not extended to win, but he may have had a much harder task had Vivanti not been slow away. . Vivanti was not defeated in her four subsequent starts, the Bronze Eagle filly proving herself easily the best two-year-old of the season by winning the Welcome Stakes at Addington, and the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton. Johnny Globe contested these events and, although he raced creditably in all, his best performance was in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes, in which, however, he was easily beaton into second place. Nevertheless, Johnny Globe appears to have made a good deal of progress in between seasons. His second to Flagship over a mi*e an.d five furlongs in his first three-year-old start at Addington last month was a striking performance, as he gave the winner' 24 yards and was defeated by little more than a length. Beat Flagship At New Brighton last month Flagship proved no match lor Johnny Globe, in spite of being in receipt of 12 yards. The former made most of the pace, but he was lee.mg the pinch with a furlong to run Johnny Globe proved definitely his superior when the real pressure was applied. ± . . Vivanti has yet to race this season and therefore it is impossible to say what progress she has made, but on

his latest form Johnny. Globe looks like playing a prominent part in the season’s leading three-year-old events. However, Vivanti’s achievements last season carried the hallmark of class, and her winning run may continue into the hew season if she has made the expected improvement.’

Won by Inches Only Prince Defaulter’s, winning margin in the Federal Handicap at Dunedin on Saturday must, have been one of the narrowest ever recorded on the course. It was one of the finishes that would have caused considerable argument if the photo-finish apparatus had not been operating.

Deaths Reported The deaths of the following horses have been reported to the New Zealand Trotting Conference:—Belle Maree, Bessie Bingen, Elegance, Farida, Guywin, Indian Author, Irene Grattan, Lady Flora, Mark May, Match Girl, Mercedes, Night Voyage, Parrish Gipsy, Sea Max, Squadron Leader, and Tatsy Dillon. Of these, Bessie Bingen, foaled in 1921, left a number of good winners, including the trotters. Bessie Parrish, Lady Bunker, and Belmoral, and Sea Max was a brilliant trotter over all distances.

Unexpected Result The “two-or-none, forever or never” ultimatum of the Trotting Conference concerning harness races on racing club programmes has had unexpected results in the south. It has provoked a retort from the Southland District Committee. Invoking the powers conferred on it to exercise general control over all race meetings in its district, the committee has notified the Winton Jockey Club that after November no programme will be passed that includes trots. The result appears to be that harness races will be deleted at Invercargill, Riverton, Gore, Winton, Wyndham and possibly other meetings. SAN DOMENICO SETS SEAL ON CLASS AS SPRINTER [X’.Z.I’.A. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY, October 2.—ln drizzling rain, Conductor won the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick by a nose from Indian Chief, with Saville Row a neck away third. He was near the leaders most of the way, and the jockey, A. Thompson, was able to use his pace to the best advantage. The favourite, Delta, led early in the race, and was in front at the three furlongs, but failed in the heavy going. Vagabond, rated as one of Australia’s best stayers, broke his off foreleg after being in a handy position at the home turn. He was pulled up before the finish and actually limped past the post, but later had to be destroyed. In the George Main Stakes, San Domenico stamped himself as the best sprinter in Australia by beating the Nizami gelding Grey Boots by a long neck. The big disappointment was Achilles, winner of the Epsom on Saturday, who finished fourth after having every chance. San Domenico stayed comfortably behind Achilles until the home stretch, when he quickly ran to the front. He hung on gamely in the closing stages to beat Grey Boots, who came from the rear in a typical Nizami finish.
