Quality Is Well Represented In N.Z. Cup Field

CHRISTCHURCH, This W---There is general satisfaction that the Canterbury Jockey Club has received a record entry of 95 for the New Zealand Cup in the centennial year of me province. Most parts of the Dominion are well represented, so the race will arouse wide interest. Apart fio m numbers it is a strong list in quality. Good staying three-year-olds were very much in evidence last season and they make a good showing in the cup list. First there is Beaumaris, while Bhutan, Tudor Prince and Super Snipe are a stout trio from the North Island, which has also provided Lord Manna, Lord Azure, Calibrate, Robin’s Reward and Lord Revel among its well performed oldei contingent. . The Stewards’ Handicap, which has drawn an entry of 53, also holds piomise of an interesting contest, as the sprinting class is good. Here again there are candidates from a wide area. Lord Moss, one of the last season’s most brilliant three-yeai-olds, is a worthy representative of Auckland.

Riccarton Contingent Riccarton stables have contributed 17 to each race. A strong team in the cup includes Beaumaris, Royal Tan, Coral Arc, Trench Fray, Detention, Flying Sovereign, Langham, Robin Dayes, Sir Abbot, Valley crold, Profane. Beau Soir, Boost, Golden Amber, Hobgoblin, Broie and Resolute. „ 1 . In the Stewards’ Handicap the local contingent includes Ballochmyle, Swayup, Bob’s March, Ned Kelly, Magical, Revelry, Terminus, Te Kooti, Johnny Peep, Trinidad, Pastel, Quarry, Boniface, Flying Orders, Resolute, Clair de Lune, High Spirits. Riccarton horses again did well on the second day of the Dunedin meeting, being in the money ten times. Dark Courage, Prince Defaulter and Whittaker were winners; Our Ruth, Robbie, My Hero, and Hobgoblin were second; while Millrace, Langham and Ned Kelly were third. Some Form Upsets

The Dunedin Guineas running upset in some ways, the form m the John Grigg Stakes. Dark Courage beat My Hero in each race, consistent form so far as these two were concerned, but both of them beat Shaiessa and Bob’s March over the extra furlong in the Guineas. Dark Courage and My Hero both shape as if they would stay and for that reason they can be accepted as Riccarton s best Derby prospects. With the return of the team that went from Riccarton for the Dunedin meeting, the local contingent is again at full strength. Candidates from the South Canterbury meeting to be held on Saturday will attract attention this week but it will be shared by horses booked for a trip to Trentham next week. _
