Westport Reception To St. Austell Bay
Officers and men of the Royal Navy frigate, St Austell Bay, at present on a visit to Westport, were tendered a civic reception yesterday afternoon. Official calls were made by the captain of the vessel, Commander N. J. Scarlet-Streatfield, D.S.C.R.N. during the morning. Visits to the open-cast coal mine at Stockton were made today by members of the ship’s company and hockey and association football matches were played against Westport teams. The ship was open for inspection by the public during the afternoon. St Austell Bay is one of two Royal Navy frigates on exchange duty in New Zealand, from the Mediterranean fleet, and is one of the latest types of frigate, having been launched m 1945. She arrived at Westport at mid-day on Sunday from Macquarie Island, where supplies, were delivered to the Australian Antarctic expedition.
