Four Accidents On District Roads: No One Injured
Four road accidents have occurred in the district within the past 48 hours, but though one involved a bus carrying a number of passengers, no one was seriously injured. There were no admissions to hospital, but medical treatment was required in at least one instance.
Kaiata Collision
Fairly extensive damage, including dented bodywork and damaged mudguards, was done to a car driven by Mr J. R. Mason, of Auckland, who was accompanied by his wife, when the vehicle was involved in an accident with a Blackball taxi near the Kaiata sawmill about 7.15 last evening. No one was seriously injured, although medical attention was given Mrs Mason by Dr D. M. Logan, of Greymouth.
The accident occurred near the northern intersection of the access road (leading to the mill) with the main Reefton highway. The car, driven by Mr Mason, was proceeding towards Greymouth, while the taxi, driven by Mr A. McDonald, of Blackball, and owned by Mr G. McGeady, of Blackball, was travelling in the opposite direction. It is understood that both vehicles overturned as a result of the impact, but the taxi was not greatly damaged. Mr and Mrs Mason were taken into the residence of Mr and Mrs W. T. Blackmun, Kaiata, where they spent the night. Mrs Mason was confined to bed today.
Bus Leaves Road
A Railways Road Services bus travelling from Hokitika to Ruatapu on Sunday left the road when trying to avoid a collision with a motorcar on a narrow stretch of highway. The bus, driven by Mr J. Wheeler, was not badly damaged, and none of the passengers was hurt, but the vehicle was unable to continue its journey. A relief bus - was ■■ dispatched from Hokitika and the damaged vehicle was towed to Hokitika yesterday. Two cars collided on a narrow bridge at Waimunga on Sunday evening. Both cars, one of which was driven by Mr T. Gilmer, of Greymouth, suffered exterior damage. One vehicle skidded when it was braked as the cars approached each other to pass on the bridge, it is reported, and it veered over to strike the other. A heavy’’truck, owned by Mr J. D. Safe, of Hokitika, was extensively damaged when it crashed down the steep bank at the bottom of Serpentine hill, near Kumara Junction, on Sunday. The truck failed to negotiate the sharp left-hand bend at the bottom of the steep hill and went straight over the bank. The driver, Mr H. Freitas, had a narrow escape from serious injury.
