WHITEBAIT SEASON POOR SO FAR: NO MAJOR RUN AS YET
Whitebaiters were out in large numbers on the banks of the Grey river this morning, but no sizeable catches were reported. So for this season there has been no major run of the fish in the river, although weather conditions on the whole have been good, and the river as clear and favourable as it has been for a number of seasons. It is understood that the biggest catches so far have been made in the upper reaches of the river, about Omoto and towards Brunner. Fishermen lower down have reported seeing shoals of the fish swimming some distance from the banks, out of the reach of nets. Consignments of whitebait by railway from Greymouth to the Canterbury market have been practically nil to date and most supplies for this destination have come from South Westland. In this area, too, fishermen are experiencing one of the leanest seasons for many years. Canning factories have not received any supplies yet.
