Visiting Athletes Wanted By Greymouth Club

An effort is being , made by the Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club

I to secure a visit from athletes who are coming to Christchurch for the (Centennial Games. Reference to the .application made to the Canterbury ' centre is made in the report to be jsubmitted to the annual meeting of the Greymouth club on Monday night .by the president, Mr T. Blackie. Mr |Blackie recalls the unsuccessful efforts made to have Empire Games tathletes visit Greymouth and expresses the hope that the club will ■be more successful on this occasion. I Reviewing the season’s activities, .the report states:— | “During the season we travelled to iWestport to compete for the Mahar .Cup which we had held for four conIsecutive years. We lost the cup to the Westport Club by a small margin; as a matter of fact the final relays 'decided in favour of Westport and we .feel glad that they are in such a (healthy position. We feel that it is '•for the good of the sport to have the (Various trophies move from one club Ito another. Westport added another |win by coining to Greymouth and winning from us the Newman Cup. |We also travelled to Reefton and took part in a sports meeting there. In addition we took part in the following:—Our usual club championships, West Coast' championships, Canterbury junior championships and Boot Shield, at Christchurch. Club Performances

“Barry Steel competed at the Em- ’ pire Games in the 880 yards and although unplaced there he gained third place in an 880 invitation held' on the last day of the games. The experience gained by him will no doubt stand him in good stead in future. W. Belcher won the New Zealand junior long jump championship; he and B. S. Hunt represented our club at the Canterbury junior championships, l Belcher winning the long jump. These | two athletes, along with three other, ißeefton members travelled regularly, Ifrom Reefton to attend our meetings. iTheir keenness was appreciated and| they set a fine example to other club 'members. I | “The West Coast championships iwere an outstanding success and drew 'a large attendance of outside supporters. At the Canterbury chain-; pionships wff'were represented by H. Hill, B. Steel, A. Blackie, and D. J. Perrin. I

!| I regret having to report the loss, through transfer, of three valuable 'officials namely Messrs E. M. Todd, L. W. Mills and R. W. Smith. The Rev Mr Sylvester also left the district on transfer, and he was a keen supporter. | Mr Mills, along with Mr Harbut, has consented to act as our delegate on the Canterbury Centre. | “During the year our ladies’ committee again put up a very fine performance. A successful shop day 'was held last year and early this year a sale of flowers was held, the flowers being donated to the club by our 'good friends Mr and Mrs Hahn of Ahaura. War Memorial Appeal “As you are no doubt aware, plans 'have been prepared showing an athletic park as part of the War Memorial. It is expected that work on the 'memorial will be put in hand in the' 'near future and the first projects will] ,be the basketball courts, swimming (baths and athletic park. You may be called upon during the coming year] to endeavour to raise funds to help the memorial committee and, if so,; 1 1 feel sure you will all do your best. 1 “In conclusion I would ask all pre-j 'sent to endeavour to induce other young people to become active memIbers of the club and once again I 'would ask parents to take as great an interest in the activities of their children as they possibly can,” states the report.
