By some means they missed the advice to change from the rail-, car to the express at Stillwater and their knowledge of South Island geography was apparently hazy, as they were content to remain in the railcar while it stopped for about 15 minutes at Greymouth. It was not until they reached Karoro, en route to Hokitika, that they found that something was amiss with their plans. They then had no alternative but to make an unexpected stay of a day in Greymouth. ,
