IRISH FISHERMEN CANDID OVER ATTACK ON TRAWLER
LONDON, June 12 (Rec. 1.30 p.m.). —lrish fishermen told detectives and civic guards in Portaleen, Donegal, today:—“We drove off the British trawler, Lock Esk, yesterday and if any foreign trawler comes near again we will drive .it off again. These trawlers have been taking away our livelihood for years. After they’ve fished five miles • between the mainland and the island of Inishtrahull there are no fish left for a month.” Detectives got a similar statement from many of the 40 fishermen they interviewed in connection with the attack by three motor-boats on the Lock Esk last night when the ship’s skipper, James Wayman, was wounded in the thigh by a rifle bullet. Wayman said tonight:—“lf they think they can frighten us from legitimate fishing grounds they are. mistaken but it’s time our Government stepped in.”
