PRICE SUBSIDIES IN AUSTRALIA: NO EXTENSION PLANNED

ADELAIDE, March 10.—The Commonwealth has rejected requests by the State Prices Ministers for price stabilisation subsidies and/or reductions in indirect taxation. This was announced today by the chairman of the Prices Ministers’ Conference, Mr F. J. Finnan. He said that the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) had informed him-that the Commonwealth Government had “decided in principle that the general extension of subsidy payments would not be a satisfactory or a workable solution to the problem, of arresting the rise in the cost of living.” “Mr Menzies indicated,” said Mr Finnan, “that the whole question, of price trends and price stabilisation policy had recently been the subject of exhaustive consideration by the Commonwealth Government. “Mr Menzies also indicated that he proposed to discuss the whole problem in Parliament in the near future.”
