TITLE-HOLDER DEFEATED AT GOLF TOURNEY
INVERCARGILL, This Day (P.A.). —The quarter-finals of the New Zealand ladies’ amateur golf championships, played at Otatara this morning, resulted in victories for three Australian players and one New Zealander. After four days of ideal conditions the weather changed suddenly about 10 o’clock and a sharp shower of hail, sleet and rain, driven by a bitter southerly, made the course difficult for twenty minutes for the competitors. After the brief storm the sky cleared, but conditions were very cold. Miss Judith Percy (Queensland) defeated the title-holder, Mrs Jackson Ball (Wanganui) 2 up in a game which went to the 18th. The Australian was playing long drives with even seconds, but Mrs Ball was not playing with her usual ease. Miss Percy led 2 up at the turn, after which Mrs Ball settled to a more confident tempo and but for two putting lapses at crucial points up to the 15th might have overtaken her opponent’s lead at the 16th. Fine Shot Played Miss Percy (dormie 2) halfstymied Mrs Ball, who negotiated successfully to win the hole. At the 17th Miss Percy laid a full stymie, but Mrs Ball holed out with one of the finest shots of the morning’s play. At the 18th both were on in threes, but Mrs Ball missed a 4ft putt to be 2 down.
Miss Zoe Hudson (Christchurch) defeated Mrs H. A. Murray, of Wellington, 2 and 1, in a closely-fought game to be the only New Zealander to reach the semi-finals, to be played on Thursday. y The game between the Australians, Miss J. Fletcher and Miss P. Borthwick, also went to the 18th. They were aIL square on the outward journey. They halved the next four holes. Miss Borthwick went to the lead at the 14th. She held her advantage to the 18th, which she won, finishing 2 up. Playing perfect golf, the two youngest competitors in the round Miss M. Bishop (Australia) and Miss R. C. Hodge (Auckland) halved the .first five holes, but Miss Bishop turned for home with a lead of 1 up. The West Australian champion eventually took the match by 3 and 1 when Miss Hodges found a bunker off the tee at the 17th. ... On Thursday Miss J. E. Percy will meet Miss P. Borthwick and Miss M.
