CYCLING 100-MILE TIMARUCHRISTCHURCH RACE

The Hornby Club’s annual Timaru to Christchurch road cycle race held, last Saturday was won by B. Campbell, of Dunedin, with I. Brooks, Christchurch, and N. Schwass, of Nelson, filling the minor places. The race was over about 100 miles, and it was the fiftieth to be held by the club. From the point of view of the spectators at the. Show Grounds the keen duel between E. Maguigan (Blackball) and J. Cooney was the highlight of the race. In a thrilling finish Cooney just beat Maguigan to record third fastest time. The young Auckland rider, P. Noble (smin). recorded the fastest time, 4hr 24min 45sec. It was his first success in southern cycling. The placings were:- B. Campbell (35min), 4hr 42min 30sec, 1; I. Brooks (38min) 4hr 39min 32sec, 2; N. Schwass Glmin), 4hr 42min 35sec, 3; E. Jones (38min), 4hr 39min 37sec, 4; I. Arnst (44min). 4hr 45min 51sec, 5. K Sutherland and B. Clarke two other West Coast riders taking, part, finished 13th and 26th respectively.
