DRIVERS EXCEEDING SPEED LIMIT IN KUMARA TOWNSHIP

Action by the traffic inspector against motorists who exceeded the speed limit, particularly on race days at Christchurch, through Kumara was urged by members at the monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council. The council requested that the traffic inspector be in Kumara on such days and that he reprimand the offenders.

Cr H. Sinclair, drew the attention of the council to the condition of overgrowth at the cemetery and suggested a workman should be sent to clean the cemetery in general. It was resolved that the matter be attended to.

The Mayor, Mr W. Stewart reported that the borough pound was being repaired and would shortly be ready. It was resolved that the town clerk call applications for the position of pound keeper, locally. The report of the chairman of works, regarding the condition of the covering over a culvert in First street, was received. It was suggested that this should be repaired without any delay. It was resolved that the town clerk call applications (locally) for tenders for grazing rights of the recreation ground (sheep only) for the summer months.

Cr C. Haines reported that the water mains had been increased in Tui street and that progress was being made to have further subscribers connected with the borough water system. A letter was received from the Municipal Association, about the appeal to local bodies, who are members of the association, for contributions to defray the costs of compiling model miscellaneous by-laws. It was resolved that as Kumara was a member of the association the request should be adhered to. A letter was forwarded to the Greenstone Sawmilling Company, in reply to an application for water connection to the new sawmill units, the company being advised that as the buildings were not rateable property, the council would supply the water, provided that the company meet the expense of the necessary pipes, and the pipes when installed would become the property of the borough. A reply from the company intimated it was agreeable to adhere to the council’s request.

Present at the meeting were the Mayor, Mr W. Stewart, Crs C. Haines, F. Rudkin, V. Louden, J. F. Gilbert, C. Evenden, W. Lawrence, H. Sinclair and J. Murphy.
