PENICILLIN PROVES A PROMPT CURE FOR SCARLET FEVER

SYDNEY,, This Day (Rec. 12.5 p.m.). —The Use of penicillin had revolutionised the treatment of scarlet fever, said the superintendent of the Prince Henry Hospital, Dr C. J. M. Walters. He added that patients treated by penicillin injection could leave hospital in a week or ten days, whereas before the use of penicillin they had to remain in hospital six to eight weeks. The treatment was discovered by Dr N. J. Symington, superintendent of the infectious diseases section of the Prince Henry Hosptial, who began experimenting with penicillin treatment about 18 months ago. Penicillin injections also prevented complications such as joint pains and mastoids.
