PUBLIC SERVICE CONCERN: SALARY ISSUE

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.),.— The progress of negotiations with the 'Government in connection with the salaries tribunal was the subject of a report from the president and general secretary received at the fortnightly meeting in Wellington of the national executive of the Public Service Association. Reports were also received from Auckland, Waikato and. Otago indicating that these local committees were seriously concerned at the delay in reaching a settlement and at the delay in remedying the unsatisfactory salary position, states a supplied report of the executive’s meeting. It was decided that the association’s representatives be instructed to make every effort to complete negotiations immediately and report back to a special meeting of the augmented executive (including the' vice-presi-dents from other centres) on October 11.

The executive also discussed conditions in certain departmental buildings, including the Turnbull Library, in relation to fire and earthquake dangers, congested working conditions and lack of staff amenities. It was decided, in view of the reported. improvement in the supply of materials, to urge the Government to begin work on a building to replace the present “unsatisfactory and unsafe” Government Printing Office.
