PROBLEM OF DAMAGE BY WOOD BORERS SOLVED?
AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).— Cheap and efficient methods of impregnating hardwood timbers with chemical compounds deadly to all types of New Zealand borer have been found by scientists at the plant diseases station at Okairaka, Auckland. Experiments and tests are continuing and when the results are applied commercially, the Dominion’s most destructive wood pest should be beaten. The increased cost per house is estimated at under £5O, if all timber is proofed. In most cases that will be unnecessary. Wood technologists and entomologists jointly attacking the problem found six compounds effective but all factors have not yet been tested and it may be some time before the experiments find practical expression.
