NEW TALENT SOUGHT FOR AUSTRALIA’S DAVIS CUP TEAM
Australians, disappointed at the Davis Cup team’s failure against the United States, are already urging the LT A A. to discard the old players and challenge in 1950 with a young team ouilt around Frank Sedgman, who will be 22 next month. Critics say finis must now be written to the Davis Cup areers of Bromwich and Sidwell bemuse they are past their prime. They suggest that players who come into serious consideration are George Worthington (21 next month). Ken McGregor (20). Don Candy (20) and Mervyn Rose (19). Critics art doubtful about G.eofl. Brown, but point out that at 25 he can no longer be regarded as a young man in tennis and the possibility of him improving is remote. Crfitics say there is no reason why i good team shouldn’t be built up of -edgman, Worthington and Ken McGregor. They add: “The team would be hardly likely to win the Davis Cup next year, 'but its chances in 1951 would be ,-ery good, if the players developed as they should.” Colin Long, a member of the 1948 Davis Cup team, says that only a move to the professional ranks by Schroeder and Gonzales will open the way to a successful Davis Cup challenge by Australia. He says they are the world’s two outstanding amateur tennis players and unless they “chase the dollars” Australia will have no hope of lifting the cup for some years. Long adds, however, that much bigger things can oe expected of Sedgman next year.
