SHIPPING HOLD-UP AT GREYMOUTH
- Heavy seas breaking on the bar entrance of the Greymouth harbour again today prevented the taking of soundings on the bar and further delayed the sailing of the collier Gabriella. The Gabriella, with a cargo of coal, timber, and posts for Wellington, has been ready for sea since last Friday morning. Another ship, the Omana, is expected to become idle this afternoon when she will complete loading a cargo of coal for Auckland.
Further shipping is expected at Greymouth during the week. The Poolta is due from- Wellington tomorrow to load coal for return, the Konui is expected from Wellington on Thursday evening to load for Napier, and the Kaimiro will arrive from Auckland towards the end of the week to load for Miramar. The Matthew Fjnders is due to arrive from Wellington on Saturday to load a cargo of timber direct for Melbourne.
The last soundings taken showed a depth of approximately 20 feet of water on the bar at high tide but the slight fresh in the river over the past few days is expected to give an improved depth.
