Gold Mining In Central Otago

DUNEDIN, This Day (O.C.).~The announcement of the devaluation of sterling and the resultant rise in the price of gold by almost £4 to £l2 4s 6d an ounce is reflected in the renewed interest in mining in Central Otago. As a resfult of the announcement, Messrs F., G. and I. McLean, three brothers, hastened to Cromwell from three separate parts of the South Island to make an early start at their sluicing claim at the Nevis, which they have been operating for some years. Work has been started thisi year at least one month earlier than usual, and after the men left Cromwell on Wednesday they had to dig through snowdrifts on the road over the Carrick range.

It is expected that mining operations in Central Otago, will receive a fillip as a result of the rise in the gold price, and it is likely that new prospectors will be seen in the district this year.
