GOODS PILLAGED FROM SHIP
AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).—“lf we didn’t have receivers, we wouldn’t have thieves,” said Senior Detective Campin, in the Police Court today, when William James Hopkins, aged 61, a waterside worker, pleaded guilty to receiving 70 yards of rayon valued at £23 8s 8d and bacon valued at £1 10s, the property of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company. The police said the rayon was pillaged from the ship Taranaki by some members of the crew. The accused’s explanation was that he bought the material from an unknown man in an hotel. Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., said he had no doubt the accused knew where the goods came from. He sentenced Hopkins to two months’ hard labour on one charge and one month on the other, the terms to be concurrent. ,
