ENTERTAINMENTS Opera House

“Ramrocl,” starring Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake. Authenticity is the keynote of “Ramrod,” an exciting filmisation of Luke Short’s well-read novel, showing at the Opera House. Set against the background of the 1870 West, this sprawling saga has all the magnificance of the early days in the West. The story tells of a selfish domineering woman who makes use of her feminine charms to gain control of a cattle town. There are no fancy chaps; no trick rodeo riders nor singing cowboys, but there are scenic moments of breath-taking splendour with action to match. Not to disregard the engrossing love story which is interwoven with the plot. Regent Theatre "On An Island With You,” starring Esther Williams. You’ll yearn to be on an island with Esther Williams, Peter Lawford and Jimmy Durante when you see “On An Island With You.” With its all-laugh plot highlighted by such spectacular production members as an underwater ballet in which aqua star Miss Williams is seen to advantage, and some wonderful dance routines featuring Ricardo Montalban and Cyd Charisse, the fastpaced story revolves about a motion picture troupe on location in the Hawaiian Islands. Jimmy Durante, as the company’s harassed assistant director on those slim shoulders all the “dirty work” falls, finds himself driven to the breaking point when the crew is augmented by a technical adviser in the person of Peter Lawford. For Lawford, in an attempt to break up the romance between Miss Williams and Montalban, kidnaps .the star and holds her prisoner until her resistance melts away.
