Rental Charged For Sawmillers’ Cottages

Allegations that a rental in excess of that allowed under the Timber Workers’ Award, had been charged sawmillers for cottages at Inangahua Junction township were brought against Henry Baigent and Sons, sawmillers, of Nelson, by the inspector of awards (Mr G. F. Grieve) in the Arbitration Court this morning before His Honor Mr Justice Tyndall. It was stated that the award provided a rental of £3 per calendar month or 13j lOd a week and that Baigent had been charging his employees 17s 6d a week. Evidence for the defence in the case of one of the houses discussed this morning was to the effect that the house was not subject to the £3 limitation, it being claimed by Mr A. Seen (Wellington), representing Baigent, that the house was not governed under the award.
