PART PLAYED BY PRESS IN THE NEW GERMANY

LONDON, August 1 (Rec. 12.15 p.m.).—The Associated Press Berlin correspondent reports that on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the licensing of the first German newspaper in the American zone, the American Military Government today congratulated the German press on its “immense contribution' to the successful establishment of democratic principles in Germany.”

The contrast between the new German press and the press of the Nazi regime was a measure of hope for the future, the Military Government added. However, it warned that there were still Germans hostile to the principles of free speech and freedom of the press, and urged the Gorman newspapermen to guard carefully their new independence.
