ATHLETICS D. HARRIS SETS NEW. RECORD FOR HALF-MILE EVENT
LONDON, May. 21.—The New Zealander, Douglas Harris, easily won the half-mile title at the Universities Athletic Union’s championships, beating Arthur Wint, the 400 metres Olympic titleholder, in the record time of Imin 53.55ec. Harris was having his first title race since he was badly injured during the Olympic Games last year. His time was 3.1 sec faster than the record for the race made in 1935. Wint took the lead from a good start and led-Harris by two yards at the quarter-mile. Wint held this lead until 150 yards from the finish, when Harris overhauled him. Harris maintains/! his brilliant burst-, beating Wint by 10. yards. Earlier Harris won his beat in 2min 3.4 sec.
