SYDNEY CUP WIN BLOW TO “BOOKIES”
As a result of threats', the Sydney Cup favourite, Carbon Copy, was under police protection prior to the big race, and. the horse was escorted under guard to the course.. He duly won, and his success is estimated to have cost the bookmakers a fortune. Carbon Copy dealt bookmakers the greatest blow in memory, when he narrowly won the £lO,OOO Sydney Cup from, the New Zealand-bred Vagabond, with a third three-year-old Benvolo, in third place. He had been favourite for the race since the start of betting, and it is estimated that in doubles alone he cost the ring well over half a million pounds.
