GOOD STEEPLECHASE FORM DISPLAYED AT RIVERTON MEETING

After falling in the Great Western Steeplechase, at Riverton, Eleanor Star, made amends by winning the two big cross-country events on the concluding days. The Silver Choir gelding came from a long way back over the last mile in his two winning outings, and he finished so well, that he must have been hard to beat in the Great Western Steeplechase, so long as he kept his feet. His fall in the Great Western Steeplechase was the only mistake he made at the meeting, and his jumping in the Riverton and Autumn Steeplechases could not be faulted. Eleanor Star has only to keep sound to be a- strong contender for some of the big cross-country races this winter. He will make his next appearance in the Otago Steeplechase. Lishcen took one or two risks in the Great Western Steeplechase, but he gave a dashing display on the whole, and had the opposition in trouble a long way from home with his superior pace on the flat. Lisheen was sent out favourite for the Riverton Steeplechase on the second day on the strength of his Great Western success, but he did not last long, tipping out at the sixth fence. He took no harm from liis fall, and should keep the Hazlett colours to the fore this winter. The Wingatui ’chaser, Page’s Raid, looked better than he has done for a long time, when he paraded lor the Great Western, and it was a pity that he failed to survive the first fence. He was cut about the legs, and had to have three stitches inserted. The injuries were not serious, but it was wisely decided not to take any risks with him. and he was not produced again at the meeting. The aged ’son of Night Raid gives every promise of returning to his best steeplechase form this winter.
