FORMER GREYMOUTH MAN WINS FIRST SIMS SCHOLARSHIP
Mr M. L. McGlashan, of Christchurch, son of Mr and' Mrs L. McGlashan, of Franklin street, Greymouth, has been awarded the first Arthur Sims Empire Scholarship in New Zealand. This is one of a series given to British universities for research, particularly in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and medicine. In New Zealand the fund is administered by the Canterbury University College Council. Mr McGlashan,. who is aged 24 years, received his primary school education at the Grey Main School, where in 1936 he was the winner of the Seddon and Watkin Memorial Medals. He later attended the Greymouth Technical High School where in 1940 he was dux and also winner of a National and Gammack Scholarships. Mr McGlashan went from Greymouth to Canterbury University College in 1942, graduated Bachelor of Science in. 1944, and took a Master of Science degree in 1945 with first-class honours in chemistry. From 1946 to 1948 he was a junior lecturer in chemistry at the college and this year was appointed lecturer.
He was an active member of the Students’ Association and secretary for a period. He is' one of the association’s few life members. Mr McGlashan, who is a keen member of the college Dramatic Society, went on the recent tour in Australia, and is now president. At the close of the present university session, Mr McGlashan intends to go to the University of Reading, in England, to study thermodynamics for two years under Professor E. A. Guggenheim.
