Deputy Killed In Mine At Rewanui Today
Caught by a fall of side coal in the Liverpool State rhine at Rewanui this morning, a deputy received severe injuries from which he died on the way to the Grey hospital. He was
John McLaren, aged about 60 years, married, of Ranfurly street, Rujaanga.’ The accident occurred almost simultaneously with the firing of a shot in a coal face in the mine. Mr McLaren had retired the normal distance from the face to fire the shot, but with the concussion, a large piece of side coal apparently came away suddenly where he was standing and struck him, inflicting severe head and body injuries. He was given immediate attention and after being made as comfortable as possible at Dunollie by Dr Wilson, of Runanga, began the journey by ambulance to the Grey Hospitals Death had occurred, however, when the ambulance arrived at the hospital. Following the fatality the men at the Liverpool mine ceased work for the day. In accordance with the policy of the union, no work will be carried out until after the funeral. Mr McLaren is survived by his wife, who resides at Ranfurly street, Runanga.
