CRICKET Greymouth Has Decisive Win Over Hokitika

Good performances by the Greymouth bowlers, D. Knapp and L. C. Lindley, who between them claimed nine wickets, were the Chief factor in the downfall of Hokitika batsmen when the match between the Greymouth district senior representative team and the Westland representatives for the Barlow Cup was played at Cass Square, Hokitika, on Saturday. Greyrnouth gained a decisive victory to retain the cup, winning by 181 runs on the first innings after dismissing lhe Hokitika batsmen for the small score of 62 runs. Knapp was far the best bowler of the match and his feat in taking five wickets for 23 runs off 13 overs, only three of which were maidens, was a good indication of his accuracy and steadiness. Lindley, on the other hand, dismissed four Hokitika batsmen for only eight runs off five overs. His performance included the “hat-trick." He look the last three wickets for an addition of only two runs to the score.

Top Score Tc Dewar With few exceptions, most of the Greymouth batsmen played well and only lour of them failed to reach double figures in the first innings, which realised 243 runs. The provincial representative, D. Dewar, showed a welcome return to form to make top score of 68:before falling a victim to the bowling of G. Marsh. Dewar’s total included five sixes and six fours. The opening batsman, S. Garforth, also played well to be second on the list with 39, while R. Donaldson (34), L. McGrath (25), and D. Hendry (21) batted confidently for their team. Bowling honours for Hokitika were shared by J. Denia, W. Hay, and G. Marsh, who took three wickets each.

In the face of accurate bowling by Knapp and Lindley, the Hokitika batsmen were unable to get settled and they were dismissed for only 62 runs. G! Stapleton and R. Cook were the only two batsmen to reach double figures, Stapleton being bowled for 26 by Knapp, and Cook for U by McGrath. Details of the scoring were as follows:—

The Lancaster Park cricketer, P. O’Malley, has received a cabled offer from the Warwickshire County Cricket Club of an engagement for two years, and his clubmate, R. Hitchcock, has been offered a trial by the club. The two players are awaiting further advice by letter of the details of the offers. O'Malley is a right-hand batsman who first played for Canterbury last season, when he averaged 68.6—third highest in New Zealand —in firstclass fixtures. His scores were 42 and 91 against Wellington, 67 and 1 against Otago and 11 and 132 not out in the North Island-South Island match. He has shown only glimpses of his best form this year, but was considered by many to have been unlucky to be omitted from the New Zealand team. Hitchcock, an all-rounder, played for Canterbury against Otago last year, when he took three wickets for 65. Mr O’Malley said last evening that he and Mr Hitchcock had intended, before the offers were made to them, to visit England this year. If the the terms of the engagements were attractive enough, they would welcome the chance of playing county cricket during their stay. A New Zealander who has already accepted an offer to play in England this next season is the Auckland player, D. D. Taylor, who was a prospect for the New Zealand team. Hutt Valley Holds Lead In Hawke Cup Match (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 27. After establishing a lead of 45 runs on the first innings, Hutt Valley fared only moderately in the second innings of the Hawke Cup cricket match against Taranaki, and at stumps had a lead of 161 runs with four wickets in hand. Scores: Hutt Valley 293 and 116 for six wickets (Kemp 30 not out, Capstick 30, Nightingale. 18, K. C. James 12 not out; R. G. James three for 14, Autridge two for 27). Taranaki 248 (Miller 46, Hurcombe 29. Scott 27. Alexander 25, Autridge 25 not out, Gray 23; Nightingale three for 52, Rudman three for 58, Robertson two for 28). BRADMAN’S LAST MATCH IN SYDNEY ! SYDNEY, February 27. j A crowd of 41,575 gathered at Syd- ’ ney cricket ground to see Sir Don Bradman bat in his last match here. He rewarded them with a bright 53 ill. 65 minutes, before he mistimed a slow ball from Miller and was caught beautifully by Meuleman, wide of mid on.

Arthur Morris scored the requisite nine runs to give him 1000 in the Australian season for the second time in his comparatively short career. With two days left for play in the Oldfield-Kippax testimonial match, Morris’s eleven with four wickets down) is 90 runs ahead of Hassett’s eleven, so that Bradman may get another innings in this match, on the ground which has seen 22 of his 117 centuries in first-class cricket.

Moroney played a most impressive opening batsman’s innings. Hassett’s eleven made 204 (Hassett 73). Ring took five for 49 and Lindwall three for 27. Morris’s eleven has made 294 for four (Morris 66, Bradman 53, Moroney not out 128}. . . .
