“You have an El Dorado here and I am not talking about your gold, coal or timber,” said the Christchurch City Council’s public relations officer, Mr T. H. Langford, addressing members of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce last evening. He was referring to the scenic attractions of the province. “I feel confident that with the completion of the Haast Pass road, the West Coast will have the finest scenic road in the world, which, if properly publicised, will bring dollars and English sterling by the thousands to the West Coast, as well as other European capital,” he said, adding that he was making arrangements for the screening of the Haast Pass film before every member of Parliament this week.
The film being prepared now for screening before Their Majesties, the King and Queen, and Princess Margaret, on their visit to Christchurch next year, would also include many West Coast scenes, particularly of the Lewis Pass, said Mr Langford. One “shot” of Lake Kanieri, he said, was the finest he had ever seen and would amaze even those to whom the lake was. well known.
The publicity given this film, and its later distribution in Australia and the Pacific coast of the United States would be of great benefit io the West Coast, he said. With the establishment of Harewood as an overseas air terminal, Christchurch would get its share of the traffic, but the West Coast would also get a major share, he added. _____
