Munro Criticised For Handling Of Howe In Cup

MELBOURNE, Oct. 18

Darby Munro, the rider of Howe in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, came in for a good deal of criticism over his handling of the New Zealand horse. Many racegoers considered that he made too much use of him, and ran to the front too early. This left Howe with little in reserve when challenged by Red Fury, which defeated him easily at thq finish. Munro certainly set Howe a severe task by assuming command three furlongs from home. Mr J. H. Marshall, the owner of Howe, does not share that opinion. Mr Marshall said that the horse’s outside barrier position caused him to cover a lot of extra ground, and Munro had to ride the horse hard to obtain a good position. Howe’s Next Start The next start for Howe will be decided when his owner returns to Melbourne on Wednesday. . The demonstration against Red Fury after his success in the Caulfield Cup was the worst on a metropolitan course for about 20 years, and probably the worst ever seen over an important event. Red Fury performed poorly in the Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield the previous Saturday. Howe won that race and finished many lengths ahead of Red Fury, but Red Fury turned the tables on him in the cup. Red Fury has been rehandicapped 91b to 8.4 in the Melbourne Cup. Inquiry Adjourned After Vagabond had come from second last to be defeated by a head by Ellerslie in the Burwood Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday, the stewards opened an inquiry into the colt’s performance. After a long hearing the inquiry was adjourned until Wednesday. Vagabond is owned by Mr F. G. Spurway, who also owns Proctor, and who has been a leading owner in Sydney for many year« He is trained by D. Lewis, a veteran Sydney trainer, and was ridden by D. Munro. . A. Beasley, a leading Victorian jockey, who had a fall from Lady Luba in the One Thousand Guineas, suffered a bruised kidney and shock. Carbon Copy, winner of the A.J.C. Derby, will have his next start in the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday. He will be ridden by Harold Badger, but no rider has been engaged yet for the colt in the Victoria Derby.
