SPORTING Wanganui Winner To Race At Greymouth

Included in C. R. Berkett’s team lor the Greymouth Trot ing Club’s meeting at Victoria Park during the coming week-end will be the promising Ennola, who won at Wanganui on the first day of the recent meeting. Ennola failed in subsequent starts at the Wanganui meeting, bill, she is well placed off the front of the Diggers Handicap at Victoria Park on Saturday. A four-year-old mare Ennola is by Gold Bar from AU'onne, and is trained by Berkett. at Templeton for slr A. Pillinger.

Ennola won the first division of the Aramoho Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, at Wanganui on October 9, from Scott Wrack and Marypark in 2.55 1-5 off a 2.59 mark on a track made slow by heavy showers early in the day. She had to be hard-driven to win after being fourth into the straight, but she is regarded as a very promising mare and she is likely to show up prominently in her Greymouth engagements . Last season Ennola had only two starts and recorded a third placing to Red Flight and Elmdale over a mile and a quarter at the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting in April. Her winning effort at Wanganui was in her first start this season. Both Red Flight and Elmdale, with much more racing, have been useful winners since meeting Ennola at Blenheim, and Elmdale won the principal event at Wanganui on October 9.

Useful Trotter After disappointing performances on the first day Nydia came into her own with an impressive win on the second day of the Wanganui meeting last Saturday. This daughter 01. Swordsman and Roma Girl is trained by C. R. Berkett and will be an interesting competitor in the unhoppled trotters’ events at Victoria Park during the coming week-end. She has not always been a reliable beginner, but there is ho doubt about her pace and even from the back marks she will be respected at Greymouth.

Interesting Acceptor Sandy Logan is an interesting acceptor for the principal event at Victoria Park on Saturday. He is engaged in only one race and has excellent recent form —a win, a second and two thirds in his four starts this season. Trained by P. P. Gallagher, Sandy Logan is by Sandydale from Kid Logan, who reached good class as a sprinter some years ago.

Flying Sovereign The Airway filly, Flying Sovereign, who scored a most impressive win in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham last Saturday, is expected to contest the Wellington Guineas on the second day, and on the manner in which she ran out the mile last week she appears likely to take a hand in the finish. She is not big, but she is all quality, and promises to develop into a big winner. She will carry only 8.5 in the Wellington Guineas.

Disappointing Kartikeya, who was one of the best supported candidates in the "Wellington Handicap last Saturday, ran a disappointing race. The explanation may be in the fact that he pulled hard early and took up a prominent position, whereas usually he runs his best races from behind. When the real racing began in the Wellington Handicap he dropped out. It was not the true form of the Finis colt and he can be expected to do better on the later days.

Oaks Candidate Balkis covered a lot of extra ground in her race at Trentham last Saturday, but when she struck a soft patch she dropped the bit and was not afterwards a possibility. The Sir Beau filly may develop into a useful winner, but apparently she will always do best on firm tracks. She will not be raced at Wellington in the coming week-end, but will be given a special preparation for the New Zealand Oaks. The Sir Beau filly is trained by the former West Coaster, V. A. Lee.

Maximum Indicated Signal Officer will race in the Har-

court Stakes at Trentham next Monday and that will be his last race before the New Zealand Cup. The son of Salmagundi and Morse Signal ran a great race under his impost of 10.3 last Saturday, and though he had no chance with Coral Arc over the last furlong he beat the rest of the field just as decisively. He showed that he is well forward for his cup engagement, in which he is likely to be awarded the maximum weight of 9.7 —a luxurious poundage for a horse of his class.

Penalised 121 b Coral Arc has been penalised 121 b for the Watkins Handicap at Trentham next Saturday as a result of his effortless win last week —an indication of the handicapper’s opinion of the merit of the performance. The Coronach—Barbacan four-year-old horse is owned by Mr A. N. Smith and is trained by J. C. Tomkinson at Riccarton.

Useful Pacer Glam is Castle showed some ability to finish fourth to Bonny Gold, Rhonda Grattan, and Gloxania after being prominent all the way in the Winchester Trot Handicap at the Soutn Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on October 9. Glamis Castle is engaged at Victoria Park on Saturday.

From Joan Conquest . F G Holmes is training a likely type of 'two-year-old filly .by Springfield Globe from a good winner in Joan Conquest for Mr H. W. Brewery. A daughter of Jack Potts and Dillon Squared, Joan Conquest is to be mated with U. Scott after she has foaled to Dillon Hall.

Withdrawn The following horses have been withdrawn from the New Zealand Derby Stakes to be decided on the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s cup meeting at Addington — Josedale Dictator—Whispering Grass 1 Colinette, Gamble—Rose de Oro c, Brilliant Globe— Lady Ham c, Springfield Globe —Lillian Bond c, Josedale Grattan—Native Huon c, Jack Potts— Lady Finance c, Josedale GrattanBelle Potts c.

Sister to Emulous Lightning Lady, which won her way to good company when trained at Rakaia by W. K. Tatterson, has been mated with Josedale Grattan. By Jack ’’Potts from Light Wings, Lightning Lady is a sister to Emulous.
